Grizzly Man: A Scene Review

After watching Grizzly Man I wanted to break down one of the scenes that stood out to me the most. The scene starts at 1hr 13 minutes and 25 seconds, it is him in his tent discussing the rain. This scene stood out to me because of the way it is filmed with the lighting as well as how he expresses himself during it. The tent he is recording is green and is reflecting that light within the tent which gives the whole scene a really cool green tint and adds some nice ambiance to the scene. Since he is shooting in a selfie style you can really see the emotion he is trying to portray and he is making an effort to get his point across more. The tone of his voice also helps set the scene because it shows his emotional state and his sort of sarcastic tone tells us he is not happy with things as they currently are. As he explains to us the lack of rain he turns to the sky slightly and yells “We need more rain! Downy is hungry!” as if he is telling God to give them more rain because the bears are suffering without it. He even goes on to say “Melissa is eating her babies” as if it is Gods fault for their acts of cannibalism because the rivers haven’t risen enough for the fish to swim up that the bears would be hunting. I also think this scene is really important to show case his mental state and his anger towards everything around him that doesn’t go the slightest bit his way. Overall I found this scene to be the one that struck me the most during the film and I love how it is just a raw, real, unedited scene of him expressing his problems and emotions.

Grizzly Man: A Media Review

Grizzly Man is an adventure documentary that follows the life of Timothy “Treadwell” Dexter over 13 years as he journeys through the Alaskan wilderness to live with wild bears and other animals.  This documentary shows us the life of someone who truly believed that their place was in nature.  Timothy had a normal middle-class upbringing and he was always fascinated by bears, even having a stuffed one that went everywhere with him.  After going off to college Timothy returned an alcoholic and a frequent drug user.  He began to have mental issues which pushed him to almost overdosing.  After that incident he had an epiphany and believed that it was time for him to go out into nature and protect it, especially bears.  He began spending his summers out in the Alaskan wilderness putting himself in very dangerous situations with wild bears.  After a few summers he began taking his camera out with him to record his life and what I believe to be his eventual loss of sanity, until his tragic death at the paws of the animals he believed he was protecting.

This documentary does a great job of showing both sides of Timothy’s life and personality.  Through the stories of his parents and those who loved him to the people that despised what he was doing and painted him a lunatic.  Those that loved Timothy believed he was truly helping protect the bears from poachers and overall just enjoying his love of nature.  Others, though, believed he was someone who was mentally unstable or even being offensive by forcing himself into their natural habit and breaking boundaries set not only by the government but also by the people who lived their natively.

Although this film shows both sides of Timothy, I truly believe that he was someone who had developed mental issues and felt nature was his only outlet.  He has a huge self-sense of justice in that everything he is doing is for the bears and the nature they live in.  I find that strange though as through the course of the film I never actually saw him do anything to help them.  He mostly just kept his distance or the few that felt safe around him he would be friendly with.  The documentary also shows his descent into to anger at the civilized world and people.  Although the park reported no issues of poachers over the years Timothy still believed that they were always coming and anytime someone came out to his area he would get angry at them.  He especially had hatred towards the National Parks Service and Government as towards the end of the film he goes on a large rant claiming how much he protected the bears while they didn’t do a thing.

`I truly believe that Timothy had some mental demons that developed over time and nature was his only outlet.  I also think that he had accepted that he wanted his fate to be out there in those woods.  It was a great film and I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in nature to watch it.

Different ways to start a fire

As the main premise of my blog is outdoor tips and tricks I thought it would be important to start with the basics of survival. The key to any survival situation is fire. Without it you can’t purify water, cook food to eat, or to keep yourself warm and safe from hypothermia. There are many different ways to start fires from using matches or lighters to steel wool with a battery. This video outlines 14 different ways to start a fire in any survival situation:

Staying organized during quarantine

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing well during quarantine and taking the proper precautions to keep themselves and their families safe! As we are all stuck at home it is very hard to stay organized and motivated to get this course work done so I felt it was important to put out a post with tips I have been using to keep myself motivated as well as organized.

The first step I took was to run to Walmart and grab a white board so that I had a space to write out what I needed to get done on a daily basis. If you don’t want to use a white board you could also use sticky notes, notebook paper, or an agenda. Staying organized is important to keeping yourself on track and making sure your getting the work done that needs to be done. It also gives a sense of structure which is important in times like these.

The second step I took was to gather all of the coursework that was to be completed during the semester from the syllabuses from my teachers and write it out in a notebook. This way everyday I can look at the dates of the work and write them out of my whiteboard as the weekly assignments. I also have iLearn setup to automatically email me a day before an assignment is due so just in case I missed something I can still have time to get it done.

By doing these two things I have been able to keep myself organized about what assignments need to be done and when. As a senior this is very important because I do not want to get behind and possibly fail a course.

There has never been a better time to to get out in nature with this Coronavirus panic!

With the massive public freak out and the growing number of cases world wide it has never been a better time to get out in nature! It is a great time to get away from people and go out in the woods to spend some quality time hiking or camping remotely. Minimizing human contact is the easiest way to prevent infections so being out in nature is a great way to do that! For those of you who have never been in the great out doors here is a video with everything you need to know to get started.

Narrator Dialogue

It was a cold, gloomy, evening in Maryland. The first snow had fallen of the year, blanketing the streets like a toddler being tucked in for bed. The sun began to set and without its heat the air began to turn cold, your hot breath looking like a big vape rip. The site of the snow was beautiful and surreal, then the sirens rang and I knew the peace we had was over and things were about to turn for the worst.

Weirdest ways to export your photoshop

Drive by hackings

As an IT student I have learned a lot about security hygiene and protocols to take to protect yourself and your network. As more and more devices become internet compatible, or apart of the internet of things, there become more avenues for attack on your network. The FBI has started testing these simple devices and have found they are very easy to compromise. Basically, a hacker can sit in his car down the street, break in to your smart fridge or Alexa, that gives him access to the network and from there it just a piece of cake for them to access all of your data.

Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories

Everyday we see in the news reports of the growing pathogen, the Novel Coronavirus. Reports keep coming out with more and more people getting infected or dying. It can be hard to separate fact from fiction, so in this post I want to debunk some popular misinformation. Firstly, the coronavirus has nothing to do with the beer company name Corona. Second, drinking corona will not give you the virus or prevent you from getting the virus. Finally, drinking bleach will not help and will most likely kill you. These are some popular things in social media that people are saying about the virus that are just plain wrong.

Are governments doing enough to combat the Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus is taking the Asian continent by storm as over 150 people have died and over 6000 are infected. This is leading many to ask the question, are governments doing enough? Should they be bringing back their citizens? Below is a reddit link that has a very long discussions. It also hopes to answer this question and many more!
